By joint work of citizens, non-governmental organizations and scientific institution a new Ordinance on closed season for sea cucumbers entered into force

The new Ordinance on closed season for sea cucumbers (Holothuroidea) entered into force on the day of its publication in the Official Gazette, 28th of March 2018. It is a remarkable success of all who contributed to solving this problem by reporting violators to state administration bodies. These actions clearly show that individuals can make a difference! The Ordinance was created by the Ministry of Agriculture on the basis of Article 12 of Marine Fisheries Act. This Ordinance sets out a permanent fishing ban of sea cucumbers in the Republic of Croatia.

The Ordinance was created as a result of public pressure and governmental and non-governmental organizations due to excessive sea cucumbers fishing across Croatian coast last year. Sea cucumbers have a unique role in marine ecosystems by decomposing organic matter and keeping them healthy. We welcome this decision and hope for new regulation on sea urchin fishing!
